Cai Mep General Port Co., Ltd. has just sent a document to the Ministry of Transport on the policy of adjusting the ship size of the planned Cai Mep General Port at Cai Mep – Thi Vai (Ba Ria – Vung Tau province).

Specifically, this enterprise proposed the Ministry of Transport to consider and approve the policy of adjusting the planned vessel size and allow the adjustment of the scale and specifications of Cai Mep General Port in the direction of extending the outer wharf ( 80,000 DWT berth) by 29m, the total length of the wharf after extension is 329m and can accommodate ships up to 150,000 DWT.

The adjustment of vessel size to the receiving planning of the outer wharf ensures the technical requirements, does not affect the Vung Tau – Thi Vai channel, the turning basin, the neighboring wharves and the operation of the inshore wharf has been adjusted. construction.

The adjustment aims to develop ports capable of receiving large tonnage ships, effectively using the Vung Tau – Thi Vai channel, which is being upgraded, as well as the development of the shipping fleet on the sea. world.

According to the Traffic Newspaper, currently, the Ministry of Transport has assigned the Vietnam Maritime Administration to study the above proposal of Cai Mep General Port Co., Ltd. in the process of making the detailed plan for the group of seaports, ports and bridges. ports, floating terminals, water areas and water areas in the period of 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 according to the tasks approved by the Ministry of Transport.

Some upstream ports in Cai Mep area have received ships of 160,000 DWT .

Cai Mep General Port is invested by Cai Mep General Port Company Limited. The project has been approved by the Prime Minister for construction investment in Document No. 344/2017. The port scale includes 1 wharf to receive ships of up to 80,000 DWT with a length of 300m, 1 wharf to receive ships of 2,000 – 5,000 DWT with a length of about 205m.

Phase I of the project has completed the construction of a wharf to receive ships of 2,000 – 5,000 DWT (length of 205m), which will be put into operation from February 2021. The large outer part of the ship (80,000 DWT berth) has been completed the design and appraisal steps according to regulations, has not yet been invested in construction.

Decision No. 1579/QD-TTg dated September 22, 2021 of the Prime Minister approving the master plan on development of Vietnam’s seaport system in the period of 2021 – 2030, with a vision to 2050, defining ” Cai Mep wharf area with the function of international transshipment gateway; there are berths for containers, general, bulk cargo, liquid cargo; meet the size of container ships with a tonnage of 80,000 – 250,000 tons (6,000-24,000 Teus) or larger when eligible; general ships, liquid/gas cargo in load up to 150,000 tons or larger, reduce the load in accordance with the conditions of maritime channel operation.

The leader of Cai Mep General Port Co., Ltd. said that currently, a number of ports upstream of Cai Mep General Port (such as Tan Cang – Cai Mep International Port) have been allowed by the Ministry of Transport to receive ships. has a tonnage of 160,000 DWT.

On August 12, 2022, the Minister of Transport signed a Decision approving the investment project to build a work to upgrade the Cai Mep – Thi Vai fairway route “0” to the Cai Mep container terminal.

Accordingly, Cai Mep – Thi Vai channel will be widened 310 – 350 m, depth from -14m to -15.5m in order to improve the exploitation efficiency of the port cluster and welcome large ships.
